Pipeline Integrity

In addition to periodic internal inspection, the PNG pipeline system is routinely patrolled by air and monitored electronically. The pipeline is also protected by an external coating and by a cathodic protection system, which inhibits external corrosion.

Pipeline Damage

Damage to a pipeline or its coating is a serious concern. A gouge, dent or scrape can weaken the pipeline and if left unrepaired, could eventually lead to failure. If you come into contact with the pipe or its coating, please contact PNG immediately. Our qualified people will assess the damage and make the necessary repairs.

Education

Being good neighbours requires a spirit of cooperation and goodwill. PNG distributes publications, provides updates to elected officials and public service announcements through the media on pipeline activities and information and safety guidelines.

Farming

PNG pipelines are constructed and designed so there is minimal interference with normal farming operations, however, some activities, such as sub-soiling, deep plowing or installing drain tile could affect pipeline integrity. If you are in doubt of the effect your activity might have on the pipeline, please call us before you begin your work. Don’t assume the depth of the pipeline, get it located and the depth verified. IT’S FREE.

5 Steps to Safety

  1. Plan your activity – Identify the precise location of your work, check records for evidence of other buried utilities.
  2. Call BC 1 Call.
  3. Be on-site when the pipeline is being located and ensure all other buried utilities are located.
  4. IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY PNG at 1-800-663-1173 if you come in contact with the pipe or its coating.
  5. ALWAYS follow the instructions of a PNG pipeline representative.

If You Suspect A Natural Gas Leak

Natural Gas is transported through PNG transmission pipeline system.

If you smell an odour like “rotten eggs”
Or
If you hear a loud whistling sound
Or
If you see a stream-like cloud or what looks like frost on the ground

IT MAY BE A NATURAL GAS LEAK

If you suspect a leak:

Leave the area on foot immediately. Once you are a safe distance from the leak, call 911 and follow their instructions.
